What it looks like in play

What parents can notice
Notice whether the child listens before guessing, can explain what a new word means in the scene and remembers the point of a story rather than only isolated details. Avoid turning shared reading into constant correction; conversation and enjoyment matter.
Try it away from the screen
Choose a familiar object and say its name slowly. Look for another word beginning with the same sound. Then invent a two-sentence silly story using both words and let the child change the ending.
A useful starting point around age 5
Start from spoken language the child already knows: a familiar name, object or short rhyme. Hearing the sound clearly before matching it to a symbol keeps reading connected to meaning.
If it feels too hard
Return to listening and context. Say the word slowly, point to the relevant picture and compare only two possible letters or words instead of presenting a crowded choice.
How to extend the idea
